Renato Buenaflor
Finance at Shiawase Energy. The one desk still awake on the submissions floor at night is his.
An ork in his mid-thirties who does financial analysis for Shiawase Energy's Southern California region, out of the AES complex in El Segundo. His half of the Corporate Court submission is the money: thirty years of maintenance invoices and deferred-work fees out of the San Onofre paper, reconciled into exhibits a court will accept.
He has no street name and would not know what to do with one. He has a SIN, a badge, a desk on the third floor, and a name the distribution list prints in full.
He was fourteen when he goblinized, and that is the fact underneath the rest of him. He grew up as the only one in the room and has spent twenty years making sure nobody in a room has to think about it: he apologizes when other people are wrong, and he checks somebody else's arithmetic without telling them he did.
The crew found him before they found anything else on that floor. His is desk 108, and in session 4 he took a cafeteria lunch with a journalist named Tony who does not exist.
The lunch went well. He talked about his work to somebody who wanted to hear about it, which had not happened in a while, and there is a dinner promised for after the report is published. What happened when he got back to his desk is session 5's business.
What the crew knows#
- Desk 108, and the terminal is awake because he went home in the middle of a sentence, which is still standing in the glass where he left it. He catches a shuttle that goes when it goes, and missing it costs him ninety minutes.
- His name is on the machine and at the top of the printed draft weighted down beside it.
- The draft is marked up in pen in a small, patient hand, including two places where he has corrected a number and written out why.
- Nothing on the desk is personal except a paper cup he has used twice.
- He said yes to lunch immediately. Nobody has asked him about his work in a long time.
- He is owed a dinner by a journalist who does not exist.
